This year’s SXSW has kicked off, and a gem that has already emerged is the short film Radical Honesty.

Radical Honesty tells the story of two people at the end of date that seems to be going well. It quickly goes downhill, however, and chaos ensues as the two try to navigate a shifting definition of a relationship on the fly.

Ahead of the film’s World Premiere at this year’s SXSW Festival, I had the opportunity to speak to creators Bianca Poletti and Allison Goldfarb. We spoke about this being their first collaboration, their process of making this film, and their advice to young people today navigating the shifting definition of relationships.

When asked if this film was inspired by a particular incident, or collective observations, Goldfarb stated, “For me, it was written at a time when I personally was very interested in…finding a relationship structure that was going to work for me, and something that was…authentic to myself”.

Goldfarb was both the screenwriter for this project, and one half of the film’s main duo, Rachel. Of the experience of being in both roles, Goldfarb said, “I had the best time”. Before this project, she had mainly been focused on acting. This project represented a creative shift for her, and she’s hopeful that she’ll continue to be part of more projects both behind and in front of the camera.

Poletti, who has previously directed numerous commercials, music videos, and short films, was drawn to this project because of the characters. Of the project, she said, “I think that it’s such a real story and it’s such a real script. When I read it, I just saw that there were…so many moments that we could play with humor, and make it a little funny”.

Of their collaboration, Poletti and Goldfarb talked about how much they enjoyed working together. They’re currently working on another project together, based on the concepts that Radical Honesty was built upon. They spoke about how this would be a great project to explore in an episodic format, following different couples in standalone entries. I have to say, I agree.

In terms of advice for Gen Z and millennials navigating the ever-shifting definitions of relationships, both Poletti and Goldfarb agreed, “It’s tricky”. As challenging as it might be, both emphasized the need for authenticity with oneself and within relationships if we want any chance at success.

Radical Honesty is a snapshot of a relationship that speaks to our current time. Led by two incredibly talented women, it’s a message that so many of us looking for love need to hear. It’s fun, sweet, and a poignant refection on the connections that make us human. Be sure to add it to your must-see list at this year’s SXSW.

Radical Honesty premieres March 12, 2022 at SXSW. Check out the teaser trailer below!
