Ms. Marvel will premiere on Disney+ on June 8th of this year. It will come just after Marvel’s upcoming flagship project, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Ms. Marvel was first announced as a project in 2019.
The trailer gave fans a first look at Canadian actress Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan, the titular superhero. She’s a superhero fan of Captain Marvel in particular, and has an expansive imagination. She struggles to fit in with her peers until she gains cosmic abilities of her own.
This is such an important story to tell. From the trailer, it seems that the series will incorporate Khan’s Muslim faith into the story, a necessary step for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). It’s clear that Marvel is in fact capable of expanding the definition of what superheroes look like, despite centering stories about middle-aged white men for far too long.
The series will be based on the character and comics featured in the comic books by Sana Amanat and Stephen Wacker, and writer G. Willow Wilson, as well as artists Adrian Alphona and Jamie McKelvie. Of note, Kamila Khan was the first explicitly Muslim character to headline a Marvel comic. It’s unclear from the trailer how much of the source material will be featured in the series.
The series will be six episodes long, not unlike many other previous MCU series. Ms. Marvel will also serve as a setup to the events of another upcoming MCU project, The Marvels, where Vellani will reprise her role along with other Marvel stars. The Marvels is set to be released in 2023.
The trailer shows the potential for a fun series about a teenager who can harness cosmic energy. Hopefully, Marvel can find the balance between telling a down-to-Earth, relatable story, with a side of otherworldly stakes.
