‘Undone’ 2×04 Review: “Reflections”

**Spoilers Ahead**

Undone hits the halfway point of the second season with ‘Reflections’. So much groundwork has been laid so far, and in many ways, the story is just getting started out now. So many stories about the past and present have been teased. There’s finally the beginning of some payoff in this episode.

There was a tie-in to the season’s premiere episode, with the woman at the cave revealing herself and providing guidance to both Alma (Rosa Salazar) and Becca (Angelique Cabral). Although Alma has shifted into more of a mentorship role to her sister, she clearly still needs guidance herself. This storyline provided just the right amount of balance that has characterized this series from the beginning and that the second season has continued.

This episode featured a reflection on worst fears coming to light. The tension that this episode created took on an almost horror quality. Without any of the trappings of gore or jump scares, the anticipation was almost unbearable in the best possible way. There are many fascinating thought experiments to be had relating to facing our worst fears. Throw in time travel and reality-bending, and everything gets more chaotic.

So much of the season so far has featured Becca at a crossroads, compelled to reflect on her present situation and make a choice about her future. Her journey is among the most relatable that we’ve seen so far. Sooner or later, we all come to that anxiety and panic-inducing moment at which we can choose fundamentally which way our life will go. Life is full of such moments. Through Becca, viewers go through the process of taking an honest look at life for what it is at the present moment.

This episode also showed us how Camila (Constance Marie) and Jacob (Bob Odenkirk) met. It was so incredibly sweet, and just made these two characters more lovable and endearing. Seeing these two in the early days of their relationship adds such depth to both of them individually. They were so clearly meant to be together from their first meeting. It’s both touching and heartbreaking to consider everything they’ve been through, seeing them at this beginning.

Finally, although Undone has always explored themes of the past’s impact on present lives, this episode delved deeper into the idea that the past is a key component of who we all are. It’s true that we can only understand our present selves when we understand our past. It’s a message so easily lost in the modern world, but one that’s important for everyone to remember.

With the second season now halfway through, Undone continues to captivate. Although some answers have been revealed, there’s clearly much more to uncover. Undone continues to find the balance between building tension and creating satisfying payoffs for the characters within the world that’s been created. If the first half is any indication, the second half of this season is sure to be something special.
