The 2023 Sundance Film Festival kicks off on January 19, 2023 and runs until January 29. The Festival always provides a first-look at movies that are sure to make an impact during the year. Taking place in Utah, Sundance is the first major film festival of the calander year.
Here are some movies to watch for at this year’s Festival!
From the creative minds behind Sing Street, comes Flora and Son, another story about the power of music. The story features the story of a single mom, Flora, who rescues a guitar from the trash in an effort to connect with her troubled teenage son.
For foodies with a mind for America’s broken food system, Food and Country is a deep-dive into farming across the United States. Food writer Ruth Reichl travels across the country to discover the root causes of the issues that plague the food supply chain.
Another documentary premiering at Sundance this year is Judy Blume Forever. Anyone who came of age reading Blume’s works will appreciate this deep dive into the author’s life and work. People were raised on Blume’s books, and this will no doubt be a tribute to an author and an artist who captured the imagination of children everywhere.
One of the Midnight features to play at Sundance is Polite Society. This movie tells the story of an aspiring martial artist, Ria Khan, who has to save her older sister. The plan hinges on a wedding heist. This promises to be a new and welcome twist on the heist genre.
Rye Lane is a story of two twenty-somethings navigating break-ups, and finding and love and friendship in the aftermath. This promises to be a modern love-story of sorts, and a commentary on what love and loss look like in the modern age.
You Hurt My Feelings is the latest comedy from Julia Louis-Dreyfus. The movie chronicles an author who finds her marriage suddenly over after hearing her husband give his honest review of her book. The movie also stars Tobias Menzies, Michaela Watkins, and Arian Moayed.
La Pecera (The Fishbowl) is a Puerto Rican film that tells the story of a cancer survivor who discovers her illness is in remission. The star, Isel Rodriguez, is a film professor in real-life. The story is a meditation on the long term damage caused by American imperialism and militarism.
Finally, a film that may be of interest to Good Sam fans is To Live & Die & Live, starring Skye P. Marshall and directed by Qasim Basir. The story takes place in a re-built Detroit, and follows Muhammad, a film director returning home. This story promises to be a meditation on love, loss and addiction, while also being a love letter to the city of Detroit.
