SXSW23: ‘American Born Chinese’ Preview

Fans attending the 2023 SXSW Film and TV Festival previewed the first two episodes of American Born Chinese. The series is based on the graphic novel of the same name by Gene Luen Yang.

The series follows Jin Wang (Ben Wang), an American teenager struggling to fit in. Before he knows it, he’s pulled into an otherworldly struggle. The show will feature an Everything, Everywhere All at Once, as Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan and Stephanie Hsu also appear.

While there is a focus on Chinese mythology, there’s a universality here. Jin’s quest to find himself is an endearing one. He so perfectly captures the high school experience and the challenges of a second-generation kid trying to navigate two cultures.

This series has the potential to be a departure from typical superhero TV fare that fans of the genre may be used to. From the first two episodes, this series could be so much more grounded than other superhero projects. The focus on the family element of the story is the strongest part of the series out of the gate.

Destin Daniel has a unique opportunity with this project to show off his artistic vision. As he prepares to lead the next Shang-Chi project, American Born Chinese already proves to be a unique canvas for him to showcase his talent. Being able to balance superhero ethos with engaging human stories will serve Daniel well going forward.

American Born Chinese has the potential to be an incredibly important series. With an all-star cast and a thrilling story, the show has so much promise. This series may prove to be the reset superhero projects as the genre continues to grow.
